Sessions are participatory and collaborative. The therapist listens closely and responds, meeting each person where they are on that day, in that unique session through the use of instruments, voice, movement, and silence. Music may be improvised, familiar, playful, gentle or energetic depending on the individual’s needs and responses. The therapist focuses acutely, and identifies everything the client does as music.
The music therapist creates a responsive musical relationship. Through active listening, intensive interaction, and careful musical companionship, the therapist works with each person for them to feel recognised, included, and able to take part in their own way.
